Overlooking Shenzhen Bay, the 150‑metre ByteDance Houhai Center stands as the tech giant company’s first self‑owned headquarters. With a total floor area of 76,600 m² and an investment of over RMB 2 billion, the tower is both a working hub and a symbol of Shenzhen’s digital economy. Hongyu was commissioned to design and deliver its façade lighting.
Lighting Design
The lighting concept draws from ByteDance’s algorithm‑driven logic and the bay’s tidal rhythm, creating a fluid “digital ripple” effect across the façade — adaptive, evolving, and integrated with the building’s geometry. The illumination is organised into three vertical zones:
Podium – warm 3000K linear lighting with blue‑green washes that echo clolours of theadjacent bay, bringing life to the ground‑level collaborative spaces and innovation labs. The light cascades like data streams, reinforcing the building’s identity as a gateway to talent and ideas.
Tower – 4000K vertical grazing lights trace the tower’s lines, forming a continuous upward motion that mirrors the flow of information and creativity. The system is programmable for different operational scenarios, from routine workday flow to event surges.
Crown – tunable spotlights shift from amber dusk to cool white, casting a gentle halo visible from across the bay, symbolising the reach and visibility of the digital economy.
Other technical features
Over 1,900 high‑output RGBW LED washers and intelligent projectors, achieving 140–210 lx uniformity with zero light trespass.
DMX512 control with 12 dynamic scenes (workday flow, event surges, low‑energy modes), integrated with AI sensors for 25% energy efficiency improvement.
CRI >92 for accurate colour rendering, IP67 rated for outdoor durability, and scalable integration for future system expansion.
Solar‑synchronised controls and recyclable optics, aligning with the building’s sustainability goals.
The lighting not only enhances the building’s nighttime presence but also reinforces Shenzhen’s role as a hub for technology and innovation.
