Though relatively modest in scale compared to other major projects — spanning 62,000 square meters — the Sun Yat‑sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou’s Yuexiu District holds profound cultural and historical significance. Designed by renowned architect Mr. Lu Yanzhi, it stands as a lasting tribute to the great democratic revolutionary pioneer Mr. Sun Yat‑sen. Today, it is also recognized as a nationally and provincially protected cultural relic and a national AAAA‑level tourist attraction.
Project Overview
In 2017, the memorial hall was designated as a key venue for the Guangzhou Fortune Global Summit, presenting a difficult challenge: completing the installation of nearly 3,000 lighting fixtures within just 40 days. The project had to balance heritage preservation, a “hidden fixture” design, and synchronized music programming — with the most challenging task being the 60‑meter dome operation, where no support points were available for scaffolding, and conventional access methods risked damaging the historic structure.
Engineering & Construction
To solve the challenge above, the lighting team introduced an indoor suspended platform system, anchored to the steel structure on the dome. Custom‑made stainless steel platforms were installed, verified through load calculations and quality inspections, enabling safe high‑altitude work without disrupting venue operations.
For the 2017 Fortune Global Forum, the interior was transformed into a magnificent hall with smart dimming and artistic lighting, offering an immersive experience for international guests. The lighting design preserves the integrity of the traditional Chinese architecture — low‑intensity LED fixtures highlight the dome and facade, while reducing nighttime energy use by 20%. Soft floodlighting also enhances the hall’s silhouette, blending seamlessly with Yuexiu District’s nightscape and drawing over 3 million visitors annually.
Through precise construction management, detailed design development, and dedicated safety protocols, the project achieved a seamless integration of modern lighting with a historic building. It received high acclaim from provincial and municipal authorities and has since become a benchmark for smart lighting in heritage sites.
